About Paschim Banga Rajya Sangeet Akademy

History of the organisation

Paschimbanga Rajya Sangeet Akademi, under the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal was inaugurated by Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh on 20 March, 1982 for the purpose of the promotion, propagation and preservation of the musical heritage (vocal and instrumental music and dance) of Bengal - both classical and folk - for the benefit of our own future generations and also to create awareness throughout the globe.

True to our commitment to highlight Bengal’s musical journey, we have constantly aimed at presenting live performances by celebrated as well as young talented artistes; organizing scholarly conferences and seminars for the purpose dissemination; honoring eminent cultural personalities with awards and felicitation; encouraging the younger generation through teaching programs and workshops; and by preserving the life and works of distinguished stalwarts through research resulting in books and audio and video recordings.

Interaction with other states and countries has augmented Bengal’s cultural status and our archives have enriched the scholarly endeavours of researchers.
