Paschim Banga Rajya Sangeet Akademi, under the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal was inaugurated by Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh on 20 March, 1982 for the purpose of the promotion, propagation and preservation of the musical heritage (vocal and instrumental music and dance) of Bengal - both classical and folk - for the benefit of our own future generations and also to create awareness throughout the globe.

Every year Alauddin Puraskar, Jnanprakash Ghosh Puraskar, Girijashankar Puraskar, Pannalal Bhattacharya Puraskar and Uday Shakar Puraskar are given to eminent personalities in the fields of Vocal music, instrumental music, percussion, semi-classical music and dance.
Principle aim of PBRSA to preserve and promote the great heritage of music and dance in the state. The Akademi is dedicated to concertize a lot of creations in different genres of music, and different disciplines of dance to reaffirm the dignity of our age old tradition in classicism as well as in ethnic arts- simple, lucid and of recreating objectivity.
Paschimbanga Rajya Sangeet Akademi and Paschimbanga Nritya Akademi ,throughout the year, organize events such as Classical Music Conferences, District Level Music Festival, Dance Festival, Dance Drama Festival, honor past legends and promote emerging talents in music and dance. These events serve as platforms for sharing knowledge, nurturing skills, and fostering a sense of community among artists.
Paschimbanga Rajya Sangeet Akademi and Paschimbanga Nritya Akademi organize exhibitions to showcase the rich cultural heritage of West Bengal. Through displays of traditional music instruments, life of Dance icons, artworks, and historical artifacts, academies try to preserve and promote the state's cultural legacy.
